History of the Bank Building - the former TSBThe first Savings Bank was founded in Ruthwell in Dumfries-shire in 1810 by the Rev. Henry Duncan. The Savings Banks grew and spread throughout the country and to many other parts of the world. Their contribution to the cult of Scottish thrift was quite simply enormous and their off-shoots, the penny savings banks, carried the tradition to all levels of Scottish society. The TSB building in Muirend was designed by Scottish architects Paterson & Stoddart in 1927. The glass roof over the original banking hall can be compared to the more elaborate dome of the former Savings Bank in Ingram Street in Glasgow's city centre. Other buildings they designed include Gleddoch House in Langbank, Edinburgh Zoo gateway and lodge and the Palace and the League of Nations in Switzerland. |
